Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. You probably know this because you’ve either heard tons of hype about in the news or you’ve noticed that Leonardo DiCaprio is king of the world again. But here’s an interesting tid-bit: had the Titanic not sank in the middle of the Atlantic, it would have docked at Chelsea Piers.

We’ve all been there at some point: it’s the late afternoon, and you’re walking out of a store with a ton of stuff. You’ve got too many bags to carry on the subway so you say to yourself “hey, why don’t I just take a taxi?” You see a wave of cabs come through but as you put your hand up you notice in horror that they all have their “off-duty” lights on. A second wave passes you. A third wave. Some cabbies ask you where you’re going, and when you say “85th street” they laugh and drive off.

As shocking (or not, considering how much New Yorkers love pizza), Lombardi’s on Spring Street in NoLita holds the crown for the country’s oldest pizza joint. Lombardi’s was licensed in 1905. (You know, the same year that Las Vegas was established.)
