If you’re not a sports fan, look away from this post. If you are, keep reading.
So tonight’s game 7 of the NBA Finals, and the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics will fight to crown an NBA Champion. But during this entire Finals, I’ve gotten flack from friends about rooting for the Lakers.
Here’s my logic: As a New Yorker (and especially as a Yankees fan) I can’t root for Boston. I can’t stomach seeing anything good happen to Boston. I feel that it’s anti-New Yorker, nay, anti-American of me to root for Boston to win.
Now, let’s qualify this: I love the city of Boston. I think it’s an absolutely wondrous city.
It’s the Boston fans I can’t get behind. They’re relentless and crazy.
While we can be not nice to Bostonians, there are a lot of Boston transplants (and even Red Sox fans) that live in New York, and they can express their loyalty freely. Not so in Boston. In Boston, being from New York is a major problem.
I went on trip to Boston two years ago with friends in a rental car, and we got serious flack from other drivers for having New York plates. One of my friends wore a Mets cap (a METS cap!) and he got flack because “New York sucks”.
See, even at a concert they have to profess their hatred.
So you see, I just can’t root for Boston tonight. I’m not rooting for something terrible to happen to any of the players, I just would rather swallow some bile than betray New Yorker Rule #2: Never root for Boston.
What about you?
Who are you rooting for tonight?
