Are Georgi Vodka’s bikini ads too sexy for the bus?

Posted by Holly Tsang On June - 30 - 2010

[via The Daily News]

You know the Georgi Vodka ads characterized by a woman’s bikini-clad butt? Some members of Brooklyn’s Hasidic community find them offensive, so MTA has pulled the ads off several Brooklyn buses. Georgi models protested outside the 41st St bus depot yesterday, holding signs with messages like “The MTA should butt out of bikini ads” – in bikinis. Do YOU think the MTA was right to pull the Georgi ads?

Editorial: Goodbye Cable

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On June - 30 - 2010

Cable TV died a little yesterday, and I couldn’t be happier.

Now, if you’re a dedicated reader of TFA, then you know that I like to find ways to save money. One of those ways (and it’s something that most people my age are doing) is refusing to pay for cable TV.

Instead of paying 60 bucks a month on cable (money that could be spent on iPhone apps food), I’ve looked around for creative solutions to getting my TV fix.

I found one solution in Boxee: a fantastic media center that pulls content from all over the web (Hulu, Netflix, MTV, Comedy Central, etc) and puts it directly in front of you. The only thing better than the day I found about about boxee was the day I learned how to install it on an Apple TV.

The key to Boxee, of course, was Hulu, with it’s massive tv-show selection.

And that’s what makes yesterday’s announcement of Hulu Plus so exciting. For $9 bucks a month, I’ll have access to a deep list of TV series. Not like now, where I just have access to the last five episodes, but full seasons, not to mention tons of movies.

Then there’s the Hulu iPhone app. You mean to tell me that  suddenly, I can catch up on 30 Rock when I’m waiting for the bus? That’s like DVR, but to the extreme!

Combine that with Netflix, NBA Gametime, and MLB At Bat and suddenly we’ve got amazing entertainment options right at our fingertips that still come out to be cheaper than cable.

It’s not perfect (I don’t get my ESPN) but it’s good enough. And for me, that’s what I’ve been waiting for.

So goodbye cable. This really is the end.

TFA PSA: Don’t Stare at women on the subway

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On June - 29 - 2010

When you stare (and we’re not talking quick, flirty glance then look away, we’re talking ooggling with both eyeballs, with a third if you could afford surgery) you’re being creepy. You might as well be stroking her hair, that’s how creepy you’re being. And no one likes a creeper.

So please, don’t stare.

L train is New York’s most romantic subway line

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On June - 29 - 2010

Well, how’s this for a surprise?

Craiglist did a study and came up with a report on the most romantic subway lines in the city. The big winner is the L train, which was rated the most romantic, and the Morgan Ave station, which was named most romantic station.

The big loser? The Lexington Ave/59th Street station, which was named least romantic.

So how does Craigslist define romance? We thought you’d never ask:

The findings come from an analysis of ads posted over the period of a recentmonth by Subway-users in the “Missed Connections” section of craigslist NewYork. The ads studied were posted by those who had fallen for a fellow traveler, without getting their contact details, and used craigslist to try and find them.

Now, some might note that the L train runs through Williamsburg, which is a very hipster area. Some might also note that falling in love at first sight and posting a missed connection might be a very hipster thing to do, and that these two facts might skew the results. But we’re not going to say that. Not at all. [Gothamist]

Party on the V train

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On June - 28 - 2010

So we told you that Friday night was the last run of the V and W trains, yes? And we also told you that people were planning to send the W train off with a bang. But what we didn’t mention (although we kinda figured) was that people were doing the same on the V train.

Bowery Boogie caught all the action of the V train’s last ride. Revelers boarded the V at 2nd ave at around 11pm and made it festive, blaring music, bursting in to Smooth Criminal and scaring the crap out of regular, unsuspecting riders. Check out the video after the break. [Bowery Boogie]
