While most of us have sat around and cried about New York City’s snowiest month ever, this snow woman is just relaxing her days away.

The New York Post just reported that Governor Paterson has decided not to run for reelection, and will likely announce his decision around noon today.

Paterson’s prospects for reelection have been increasingly dismal over the past couple of weeks, and the New York Times exposé listing some of his dirty secrets certainly did not help.  This morning, the Post is saying that Paterson’s reported intimidation of a woman who said one of his top aides assaulted her is likely the main impetuous behind his expected dropout announcement.

Happy Snow Destruction Day!

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On February - 26 - 2010

Yesterday was the ugliest day of weather I can remember. Today is just snowy, which sucks, but it’s better than slurpee weather.

Hey, if you’ve got snow day pics, be sure to send them to us! Email us at contactus@thefunkyapple.com and we’ll put them up on the site!

This Week’s NY Top Tweeter is DopeGirlFresh

Posted by Sarah Babka On February - 25 - 2010

Twitter can be great, or it can be an abyss of spam and stupidity – it all depends on who you follow.  Thankfully, you don’t have to sift through thousands of NYC tweeters to find the good ones, because The Funky Apple is going to do all the work for you!

Every Thursday, we feature one of the city’s best tweeters, and why we love them.  They might be the best because they are informative or hilarious, or they might be completely random.  Regardless of the reason, you are going to enjoy having them on your timeline!

@dopegirlfresh, aka Flask Gordon, aka Sparkle, originally hails from Philly, but recently became an official resident of the funky apple, and after going through the hell that is NYC apartment-hunting, has found a home in Bed-Stuy.  She is a late twentysomething writer, doula, shoe fanatic, and sometimes dominatrix.  And of course, she is a hilarious tweeter, and is also amazingly prolific (she is currently at 42,787 tweets and counting!).  Her tweets range from silly (see “#bootybuttcheeks“) to straight-to-the-point social commentary ( “date rape jokes ARE NOT JOKES. wtf is WRONG WITH YOU FUCKERS?! grow up. get a life.”).  Flask also destroys every trending topic she picks up, in the best way possible.  Her recent treatment of #firstdaterules provided hundreds of New Yorkers with a solid morning of LOLs and hearty cosigns (ex: “#firstdaterules if you try to pinch my cheeks i will stab you with whatever’s handy. trust.”)

And the best part?  @dopegirlfresh is so fun to talk to, she might end up actually being your friend in real life – and she has the inside scoop and cheap and delicious mojitos!   So go follow her, and be sure to send us your nominations for next week’s New York Top Tweeter!  @thefunkyapple

Loehmann’s Clearance Clearance – Clothes for a buck!

Posted by Sarah Babka On February - 25 - 2010

One of my personal favorites for designer steals, Loehmann’s, is having a clearance sale on their clearance today.  Everything with a clearance tag is $1-$125, depending on the original price.  For example, original prices of $19.99 are $5; $29.99 are $10; $39.99 are $15, and so on.

This isn’t the very best Loehmann’s flat rate sale (that’s the one where they mark down from the clearance price), but there are sure to be amazing deals to be found, which is why I’m headed there shortly :)   Last time they had a similar sale, I got a pink Marc by Marc Jacobs jumper for $15, so I wanted to give my TFA fashionistas a heads up too!

There two Loehmann’s in Manhattan tend to have the best selection:  The one on 17th Street and 7th Ave has the best high-end designer stuff (like Century 21 without the threat of death by stampede), and the one on 73rd and Broadway is great for dresses.  They are both right on the 1 train.  Oh, and if you find anything great, tell me about it!
