Weekday Hotspots

Posted by Supreet Kesar On January - 31 - 2010

Okay, if you’re anything like me, you do your intense sleeping over the weekend, and your working and drinking during the week.  Tons of places have weekend specials, but what’s an amazing spot to hit when you just want to have a good time with friends after a long work day?

Let’s check out the boroughs I spend the most time in:

Manhattan Pick:
The Crocodile Lounge- This is probably my first choice, overall.  They have drink specials until 7pm (shots for $3-$4, beer for $3-$5, well drinks for $5-$6).  These might not be jaw-dropping prices, but pair it with this: FREE PIZZA WITH EVERY DRINK.  Yes.  There is no catch; you get a ticket with every single drink that you exchange for a personal pie…a GOOD personal pie of pizza.  And one more thing about this bar- they have Skeeball in the back for 25cents, as well as other arcade games.  You can’t go wrong!  It gets crowded on weekends, so on a weekday, this place is perfect.
(Last thing: there is an even cheaper version of this bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn called Alligator Lounge.)

Queens Pick:
Danny Boys Pub is one of my favorite places to go in Queens.  Located in the heart of Middle Village, it is another place with amazing food offers, and very affordable drinks (no $10 shots here!).  On Mondays, they offer 20cent Hot Wings and sports drink specials.  Taco Tuesday brings… what else, $1 tacos.  Wednesday night wings are 10cents (all flavors).  Thursdays are Clam night: 25cents for clam on the half shell.  Beers and drinks are, on average, $5-$7, and with the cheap food, you end up getting a lot for very little.  Yum.

Brooklyn Pick:
Union Hall is, hands down, one of the best places to visit in Brooklyn.  It is a warehouse-turned-bar with a ridiculous amount of room.  They have fireplaces, an incredibly library, two indoor bocce courts, an outdoor garden space, a performance venue, and a downstairs bar. Every third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM, you can play “Spelling and Grammer bee” where for each wrong answer, you’ll have to take shots of booze.  Any further questions on why this is a great place to go?

Now, these are just some of my top-picks.  If you are a Bronxite or a Staten Islander, tell us where you drink!  What are your favorites, and why?  Please, I need more places to go!

Denmark is Watching You Pee

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On January - 31 - 2010

Gizmodo just threw up this amazing Michael Paukner graphic showing all the satellites that orbit the earth, sorted by nation. The bigger your circle, the more satellites you have.

But it’s not just working satellites. The graphic also details malfunctioning ones, as well as plain old space crap. The winner in the space crap game? Good ole’ America.

Holy Crap! Denmark has satellites! Big brother is watching! We’re all doomed!

What’s on TV: January 31

Someone's not getting an award this year..

Games, games, games! Some matter, some don’t. And I guess those music award thingies are happening too.

3:30 pm ABC: Lakers vs Celtics: Personally, I believe that everything from Boston should go down in a flaming heap of poo, so needless to say, I’ll be rooting for Kobe and the Lakers.

Boston sucks! Boston sucks!

7:00 pm CH11: Knicks vs Timberwolves: Man, the Knicks have been hard to watch lately. They even lost to an unloaded (bad pun intended) Wizards team last night. But beating a team you smacked earlier in the week always helps.

7:20 pm ESPN: The Pro Bowl: Does anyone really watch the NFL All-Star game? Does it matter that it’s now the week before the Super Bowl? It’s still kinda meaningless. Well, it’s on TV anyway, and it is a game…

8:00 pm CBS: The Grammies: It’s not a game, but if Dave Matthews Band doesn’t win album of the year, I will choke someone!

T.F.A. Tip: Cabbies Can’t Talk Anymore

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On January - 30 - 2010

We might just be able to survive cab rides now!

A strict city-wide ban on using cell phones, bluetooth headsets, and GPS devices while driving a taxi went into effect on Friday. The cost of violation is a wallet-hurting $200 fine.

The Daily News writes that Cabbies are obeying the law.

During a two-hour period in midtown, more than 200 cab drivers observed by the Daily News were abiding by the new rule, apparently not willing to risk a $200 fine by using their phone, GPS or portable gaming device behind the wheel.

By the way, portable gaming device? WTF? Has anyone really seen a cabbie playing PSP while driving?

How To Safely Shoot Up

New Year’s Resolution: Stop doing drugs…unsafely.

To help drug addicts keep their resolutions, the New York City Department of Health spent $32,000 printing thousands of how-to guides for heroin users in early January.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended the initiative, saying “Nobody condones drug use. But if you’re going to use it, it certainly is not in anybody’s interest in society to have you get HIV/AIDS.”

The 17-page booklet (complete with illustrations) includes safety tips like “Drop the cotton directly into the cooker. Don’t touch it!” and “Warm your body (jump up and down) to show your veins.”

Obama administration, take note: this is how you do healthcare reform.

The MTA found the Batcave

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On January - 29 - 2010

While the rest of us ground-walkers toil in freezing temps above ground, those adventurous mavens working for the MTA are busy below the surface, tunneling to bring the LIRR to Grand Central.

Here’s another photo:

Dig on, you underground railroad diggers. We salute you. Just don’t kill the W train, and try not to scratch the Batmobile’s paint.
