Summer Parties at P.S.1

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On August - 2 - 2010

Got nothing to do on Saturdays? Well then you should probably consider hopping on the 7 train and heading to Long Island City, where P.S.1 (22-25 Jackson Ave, Queens- Google Map)  has parties every Saturday from 2-9pm. Admission is $15 and includes access to the museum’s contemporary art collection (it’s a part of the MoMA, after all).

Oh, and if you live in L.I.C., bring proof of residency and your admission is free.

And one more thing…many acclaimed artists perform at the parties (hint, ?uestlove will be playing on the 14th). For a full calendar of events, click here.

Star Wars on the Subway

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On July - 15 - 2010

Fun Fact: I don’t like Star Wars. I know I’m the only person on the planet that doesn’t, but it’s cool. I like being alone.

That said, this is still super awesome. [Gothamist]

I spy with my little eye…Kobayashi before his arrest!

Posted by Holly Tsang On July - 8 - 2010

Thought I’d post this while everyone’s still talking about it.

I went to Coney Island on July 4th and walked right by Six-Time Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Champion Takeru Kobayashi posing for a couple of photographers on the boardwalk.

Fitting that he was wearing a “Free Kobi” T-shirt (no doubt a reference to the contract squabble with Major League Eating that made him sit out of this year’s hot dog eating contest). I can imagine these shirts becoming viral in protest to his very unnecessary arrest. I certainly want one!

And sure, maybe he shouldn’t have jumped up onto the stage and resisted arrest, but is he really a threat to anyone? What was he going to do, eat somebody? This is no way to treat the man who made the sport of gluttony (a.k.a. competitive eating) famous.

The last four contests have been won by Joey Chestnut, but this year he “only” ate 54 hot dogs, a far cry from last year’s 68. Perhaps this is an opening for Kobayashi to reclaim his title; that is, if he’s ever allowed to compete in the Nathan’s contest again. FREE KOBI!

TFA Explains: Best places to watch the fireworks

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On July - 2 - 2010

Macy’s is giving a big middle finger to Brooklyn and Queens again this year by having the Fourth of July fireworks on the Hudson river. So if you were planning on watching the fireworks from one of the many East River parks, you’re screwed.

But don’t fret! We’ve got a great list of places to watch the fireworks from! Check them out after the break: Read the rest of this entry »
