Sophie Blackall finds the art in missed connections

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On July - 9 - 2010

It’s no secret that we love missed connections here at The Funky Apple, so it’s rather heartening (and frankly we feel like poop heads for not spotting this earlier) to point out artist Sophie Blackall, who turns missed connections into amazing works of art every week on her blog, Missed Connections.

You absolutely should visit her site, in fact, you should do it right now. And just in case you were wondering how or why she makes these posters, there’s a video for that, right after the break.

Jay Shells’ Subway Etiquette Posters: Now on Video

Posted by Nigel Chiwaya On July - 9 - 2010

Do you remember the artist Jay Shells, who was placing (very much needed) subway etiquette posters on subway trains? Well, now there’s a video to go with it. Enjoy, and remember, no one likes it when you clip your nails on the train.

“Somebody Gonna Get Pregnant” Art Opening Tonight!

Posted by Sarah Babka On June - 3 - 2010

One of my favorite wild NYC acts, Ninjasonik, dropped the single “Somebody Gonna Get Pregnant” and the accompanying hot mess hilarity video last year, and sent out the 12 inch vinyl single with a blank white sleeve to 60+ artists.

Tonight the results will be on display in DUMBO, at the opening of the first Ninjasonik Vinyl Sleeve Art Show.  The opening reception is from 5-10pm tonight at Front Street Art Galleries, located at 111 Front Street, BK.

[And if you like the song (you know you do!), you can buy it from Amazon by clicking on our Now Listening bar below]

Picassos You’ve Never Seen – For Free!

Posted by Sarah Babka On May - 21 - 2010

There is an abundance of amazing art in NYC. There are many free shows, and an impressive amount of work from the masters. Both of these can be great, but if you want both at once – to see the rare works of a truly iconic artist for free (not even a suggested donation!) – check out the Century of Picasso exhibit at the Jan Krugier Gallery.
