Those who have tried to take their iPhone overseas know that it can be an expensive and irritating experience. Those that try to use their old iPhones on T-Mobile know that it is impossible unless you jailbreak and unlock it. Those that try to use their iPhones on Simple Mobile know that it makes you want to smash the damn thing against a wall. Well, now things are getting a little easier.
AT&T became a little nicer yesterday, as they’re now offering to unlock out-of-contract iPhones for their customers. Of course, there are a variety of stipulations you must meet.
- You have to be an AT&T customer with an account in good standing.
- The phone cannot be tied to any current contract.
- You must have completed your AT&T contract and upgraded to a new phone or paid an early termination fee.
So basically they won’t do it for anyone that just bought an iPhone 4S two days ago, but those of you with iPhone 1, 3G and 3G’s should be fair game. Once you’ve unlocked your iPhone you can take it with you overseas or sell it on craigslist or eBay for a pretty decent penny, as T-Mobile subscribers itching for an iPhone won’t have to jump through as many hoops to make unlocked phones work. If you’ve got an old iPhone that you want to unlock, try calling AT&T customer service at 1-800-331-0500 and let us know what happens.
