Happy monday! Here’s your weekly dose of fear: a ton of New Yorkers are getting struck by subway trains. According to the NY Daily News 147 New Yorkers were hit by trains last year. Even scarier, that number was up 19 from 2010. That means that New Yorkers are hit by trains every 2.5 days.
Subway accidents have long been a tragic part of New York, (heck we’ve written about them a few times in the two years we’ve been around.) But as awful as it is for the people that are killed by the trains, it’s also horrible for the conductors that are driving the trains. The New York Times wrote about their side of the story in 2005, when a member of the TWU estimated that one or two passengers gets hit every week.
One or two a week. Think about that the next time you decide to lean over the platform.
