New Yorkers loved their OkCupid in 2011, especially during Hurricane Irene

by Nigel Chiwaya on January 5, 2012

It looks like online dating took another step out of the corner of shame in 2011, as New Yorkers flocked to the dating website OkCupid in en masse to try to find love. According to Runnin’ Scared logins to OkCupid doubled from over 30,000 to 60,000 between January 1 and December of last year. The dating service revealed a ton of other data as well.

For instance, most people sent messages to other users on Sundays and at the beginning of the week. (Y’know, because people are actually dating on the weekends. That or they’re not dating and just not sending messages so that they look like they have a dating life.)  And how’s this for a strange twist: over 88 thousand messages were sent during Hurricane Irene weekend, probably because everyone was trapped indoors for two and a half days. By contrast, Valentine’s day was a pretty low day (because no one wants to be the loser sending desperate messages on Valentine’s day.)
