Came across this gem from realtor Solaria today. NoMa. Where could that be? You’d expect it to be in upper Manhattan, right? Maybe Harlem, maybe even Inwood.
Wrong. NoMa is what Solaria is calling their Riverdale, Bronx condos. I’ll repeat: according to Solaria, NoMa is in the Bronx.
Add another one to the list. What do we have thus far? MiMa, SoMa, SoLita, NoMad, BoCoCa, Two Bridges, SoHa, SpaHa, Southside, and now NoMa.

Look out, Tuck Shop, there’s a new meat pie baker in town. Australia’s Pie Face Cafe is opening their first international location here in New York and to celebrate they’re giving away free meat pies and coffee all day long.
If you’ve never had a meat pie, get over yourself; they’re delicious. If you’re chomping at the bit already, then head on down to 1691 Broadway (at 53rd Street) and get yourself some free meat. Happy Australia day!

If you’re a New Yorker odds are you’ve had to deal with per-ride Metrocards. And no matter how much Metrocard math you do at some point you’ve probably been left with a card with an absurd balance of 65 cents, right? Hell, if you’re like most of us, you probably have a whole wallet full of strange-balance Metrocards. Well here’s a tip: did you know that you can combine all of those metrocard balances onto one card? All you have to do is walk up to the station agent and ask them.
Where it gets even wilder is when you start picking up Metrocards that other people have tossed aside and combing those to your balance. This is a perfectly legal practice, it’s pretty much the subway equivalent of finding a penny on the sidewalk.
Now, my subway-faring-friends, go forth, find discarded Metrocards and never pay for a ride again!

In case you forgot, the MTA’s transit workers are still working without a contract, and while everyone keeps saying there will be no strike, the worker’s union keeps doing things that make us kinda panic. Take, for instance, the time they pulled out of negotiations with the MTA. Or today’s report that the TWU won’t take the threat of a strike off the table. Here’s what TWU head John Samuelson said at a press conference, according to the Post:
“We would never take a strike off the table, never,” said Samuelsen after an Albany press conference that demanding the MTA provide a “fair” contract to workers.
Well that’s just peachy.

Two years ago today The Funky Apple went live, poking fun at Hiram Monserrate and panicking that 90s fashion was coming back in style. (Here’s the full recap of the first day’s posts.) We like to think we’ve matured around these parts in the two years that have followed (there’s certainly less swearing), but either way it’s still been an incredible ride. To those of you that have stuck around since 2010, thank you so much. To those that are new to the site, we hope you’ve enjoyed what you’ve seen thus far.
We’ve got even bigger plans for the site in 2012 and we hope you’ll stick around to see us turn them into reality.

Your hard work has paid off, New York: Travel Magazine has finally named you the rudest city in America. The annual survey listed the Big Apple as the second rudest city last year, prompting NYC Rude Moments to launch a campaign to get the top spot. It worked; Travel magazine’s readers gave the Big Apple the crown for the first time since 2009. The magazine also ranked New York number 1 in the country for theater (duh), but only number three for pizza, behind Chicago (okay) and Providence. (wtf? Providence makes pizza?)

Are you a 7 train rider that’s sick of riding around in the line’s crappy old cars? Do you look at the E, 2,3, L and Lexington lines with jealousy? Do you wish your train had automated announcements and electronic signs? Well, if the photo above is accurate, you’ll be getting all of that, baby.
The photo above, uploaded to Wikipedia, claims to show a swanky new R188 7 train parked in the Corona rail yard in Queens. Not so fast, says Second Ave Sagas, which claims that this is just an “old” 4 or 6 train car with 7 train clothing. (You don’t really want to get into the difference between the R188 and the cars the 4 line uses, do you?) Either way, 7 train riders, at least you know that the MTA is thinking about you. Who knows, maybe they’ll even dump the old cars in the Hudson River this time.
